Reconsecration Ceremony of Surb Gevorg Cathedral Church in Tbilisi

The project to restore the church was initiated in 2012 by IDeA foundation. Tim Flynn Architects is among Armenian and Georgian specialists involved in the project.
The project was supported by the Georgian government and received the blessing of the Catholics of All Armenians Karekin II. Taking place on October 31, 2015 was the opening and reconsecration ceremony of the cathedral church. A cultural-educational center will be created at the church at the next phase of the program. The overall cost of the church restoration project totals $3.5m.
“At all times, the Armenian Church has been not only a spiritual, but also an educational, cultural and enlightening center, especially for Armenians living far from their historical homeland. Restoration of Surb Gevorg Cathedral Church will allow the Armenian community of Georgia to live a full-fledged spiritual life”, noted Ruben Vardanyan, the co-founder of IdEA foundation.
Surb Gevorg Cathedral Church is one of Tbilisi’s oldest churches, built in 1251. Many manuscripts were created in the church scriptorium during the XIV-XV centuries, which are today stored in Matenadaran.
Over the course of its history, the church has repeatedly experienced deprivation, destruction and fire, while always being restored and reborn.
